On the Death of Pope Francis

Media Release from the NSW Ecumenical Council

22 April 2025

The NSW Ecumenical Council unites with all the people of God in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory to extend our deepest condolences to our Catholic brothers and sisters near and far upon the death of Pope Francis.

Pope Francis was dedicated to the service of Christ and of His Church. He showed by example how to follow Jesus with courage, fidelity, simplicity, and sacrificial love. He was a tireless example of humility, compassion and care for the poor and marginalized, inspired by the saint so well known for his solidarity with the poor and care for creation. He was a consistent voice for inclusion and peace between nations, working to end armed conflict and supporting initiatives for dialogue and reconciliation.

In pursuing a Catholic missionary focus, Pope Francis modelled the gift of receptive ecumenism, listening to others and learning from their experience, and committing to mutual prayer across ecclesial boundaries in humble service to God.

We give thanks to God for the service and example of Pope Francis and unite with all people of Christian faith in praying for the eternal rest of his soul and entrust him to the loving mercy of God.

Sincerely in Christ,

Rev Carmel Ieraci, Interim President

Rev Dr Rod Benson, General Secretary

The Wellspring Community acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the over 300 nations of Aboriginal peoples across these lands now called Australia. We pay our respects to the Elders past, present, and future. We declare that sovereignty has never been ceded.

We support the Uluru Statement from the Heart, and its three central calls of Voice, Treaty, and Truth and acknowledge it as a foundational document for justice for First Nations peoples in these lands. We acknowledge that the continuation of the cultural, spiritual and educational practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are an essential part of the culture and soul of this nation.
